Chapter 2: The Catcher in the Rye
Holden Caufield is a seemingly common16 year old boy, freshly expelled from his prep school. The novel revolves around the two days following his expulsion, during which, disenchanted, Holden embarks on a journey, with a mission to unearth the truth and deeper meaning in a superficial, sterile world caught up in appearances. Through Holden’s blunt honesty and refreshing curiosity but also innocence, the reader is exposed to the issue of acquiring an identity and belonging to the world. The defiance against growing up, abolishing innocence, originality and hope is what ultimately deems this hero an icon of teenage rebellion. We feel like we should all take after Holden and his unapologetic love and hate for the world he lives in.
